The consultant hired by the Madison School Board to coordinate its search for a new superintendent didn’t raise questions about the work experience of finalist Walter Milton Jr. in its background investigation summary, records show.
But Milton acknowledged to board members in written materials that an Internet search about him would turn up “negative articles,” which he said were erroneous, according to documents the Madison School District released Tuesday to the State Journal under the state’s Open Records Law.
The records don’t indicate whether the news stories Milton, the superintendent in Springfield, Ill., cited were ever provided to the board, and questions remain about how much members knew before naming him a finalist.
In an interview Tuesday, Milton said the School Board asked him to withdraw his candidacy prior to a meeting with the public because of a negative reaction from the Madison community to his candidacy.
“I was told this wasn’t going to go well,” Milton said.
At the time, the School Board announced that Milton withdrew after telling board members Madison was “not the right fit.”
