If congressional voting records are any guide, no state has two U.S. senators who are further apart politically than Wisconsin’s Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin.
Johnson, a Republican, ranks to the right of roughly 95% of his Senate colleagues in two well-established nonpartisan rating systems, one by the National Journal and one by political scientists Keith Poole and Howard Rosenthal. He was rated the fifth most conservative senator in 2012 in ratings released this week by the National Journal.
