Funds for a set of competitive state grants to support literacy initiatives — part of a key bipartisan education effort in Gov. Scott Walker’s first term — are rapidly dwindling, and Walker is seeking to distance his office from overseeing the effort.

The governor and the Joint Finance Committee have chosen not to fund the Read to Lead Development Fund in the next biennium, according to a spokesman for the Department of Public Instruction.
