Not the story you might be expecting…
The shooter, we all know by now, walked up to the unsuspecting politician at a shopping center on a warm and muggy and otherwise wholly normal day. He was in his early 20s, no more than 21 or 22.
His target wasn’t a president — presidents are hard to get close to with a handgun — but somebody high-profile enough to leave a mark.
When he got within 18 inches he started firing, first at the politician who happened to be a Democrat, then at anyone else. Among the victims: one man shot in the stomach, another in the throat, a woman put down with a bullet to the leg before the shooter was wrestled to the ground.
