“The governor is probably going to have to go to the doctor for whiplash for all the times he’s talked out different sides of his mouth on this,” Pocan said. “It seems like he’s trying to have it both ways.”
Jocelyn Webster, a spokeswoman for Walker, said the governor is seeking to uphold the state constitution, which includes an amendment passed by voters in 2006 that defines marriage as between one man and one woman.
“Governor Walker’s position has not changed,” Webster said Wednesday. “He voted for the amendment in 2006 and his position remains the same.”
Also Wednesday, all 15 Democratic Wisconsin state senators sent Walker a letter asking that he drop an appeal of a recent decision by a federal judge in Madison striking down the state ban.
